2012-06-07 12:57:51 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Karen Nolan, PhD, has been nominated for the 2012 Novel Art in Science Award for her work in restoring function to stroke survivors with foot drop

Karen J. Nolan, PhD, research scientist at Kessler Foundation, has been nominated for the 2012 Novel Art in Science Award for her work in restoring function to stroke survivors. The Novel Award recognizes excellence in pressure distribution research. Dr. Nolan, an expert in walking patterns, studies techniques to improve gait in people with disabilities.

“I am very honored and excited to have this research nominated for an award,” said Dr. Nolan. “My research explores new ways to improve mobility of people with physical disabilities, including stroke survivors, so that they can have more active lives.”

She received the nomination for “Changes in Center of Pressure (CoP) Displacement with the use of a Foot Drop Stimulator in Individuals with Stroke,” which was submitted to the Expert Scientific Meeting (ESM) biannual conference. Mathew Yarossi, a biomedical engineer at Kessler Foundation, co-authored the research. As a nominated author, Dr. Nolan will present a paper on her original research at the international ESM 2012 meeting to be held at Aalborg University in Northern Jutland, Denmark in August.

The award for the best scientific manuscript in the field of load distribution measurement will be announced at the final ESM reception. All papers are reviewed by an international review committee from the fields of biomechanics, engineering, and medicine.

Dr. Nolan is currently comparing the WalkAide, an electrical stimulation device made by Innovative Neurotronics, to a traditional ankle-foot orthosis in stroke survivors with foot drop. She is also an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UMDNJ—New Jersey Medical School.
