Kessler Foundation establishes Hurricane Sandy Emergency Fund to award grants to disability organizations providing aid in New Jersey

West Orange, NJ. November 16, 2012. More than 200 guests supported Kessler Foundation’s Rebuilding Lives after Hurricane Sandy: A Benefit for People with Disabilities on Thursday, November 15, at The Grove in Cedar Grove, N.J.

“As we look ahead to recovery, a group often overlooked by Hurricane Sandy’s effects is people with disabilities. Many lost wheelchairs, ramps, vehicles, medical supplies and access to accessible housing,” said Rodger DeRose, president and chief executive officer of Kessler Foundation. “They lost their means of independence and necessary resources to stay healthy. That’s why we’re here today—to address these needs and begin to rebuild the lives of people with disabilities. It’s great to see the community come together to support this important cause.”

Comedian and New Jersey native Jeff Norris served as emcee. Norris is determined to do all he can to help those affected by the storm. Half  of the profits from his shows for the next year to the Hurricane Sandy Emergency Fund.

Ben Vereen performed highlights from his show, Steppin’ Out, including Broadway hits from Jesus Christ Superstar and Wicked as well as Sinatra classics. In 1991, Vereen underwent rehabilitation at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation following a car accident. He had thought his theatrical career was over; but with rehabilitation, he regained his function and within ten months, returned to the stage. “I’ve had to wait twenty years to give back to Kessler with a performance,” Vereen said. “Kessler Foundation’s work in rehabilitation research is so important. I’m living proof of what is possible. With Kessler’s support, there are no limits to recovery.”

“This evening was originally supposed to be a fundraiser for Kessler Foundation to support their research and employment initiatives for people with disabilities,” he continued. “But when the hurricane hit, they immediately wanted to help others. That’s how Kessler is—they are selfless and always think of others first. I love this organization and I’m so happy to be here tonight.”

Frequent performers at the Jersey Shore, The Emulators, began the evening singing songs from the eighties. The Platinum Band closed it out as guests danced to songs from the 1960s through today.

The benefit also featured silent auctions, boardwalk games and food, caricature artists and other activities. Guests bid on prizes ranging from sports memorabilia to  overnight getaways.

Nearly $28,000 has been raised so far to support the Foundation’s Hurricane Sandy Emergency Fund. Grants are available for disability organizations that provide aid in New Jersey. Some grants will help organizations continue to provide services to individuals with disabilities. Grant dollars will also fund home modification, assistive technology, transportation, personal assistance care, durable medical equipment and other pressing needs.

Kessler Foundation continues to accept donations for the Hurricane Sandy Emergency Fund.
