Locomotor and Bladder Function in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury

This study demonstrates that epidural stimulation may be a method for improving stepping, standing and bladder function in people with spinal cord injury. This type of stimulation is given near the spinal cord through a device that is placed inside the body during a surgery.

Participation lasts approximately 2 years.

Inclusion Criteria
  • 22 years or older 
  • Have a spinal cord injury between C8 and T10 that is not getting worse 
  • At least 1 year post injury and in stable condition 
  • Unable to move legs at the hip, knee and ankle joints by choice (voluntarily) 
  • Unable to stand independently 
  • Not taking anti-spasticity medication 
  • Have not received Botox injections in the last 6 months 
  • Have bladder dysfunction as a result of spinal cord injury
