Improving Postural Responses to Avoid Falls after TBI

The purpose of this study is to assess a balance training program to see if it can be helpful in avoiding falls in people with TBI.

The study will involve three groups of research subjects. Participants with TBI will be randomly assigned to a balance training program or to usual care without balance training. Healthy control participants will not undergo balance training. 

Individuals in the intervention group will be enrolled in the study for 4 weeks. There will be a total of 19 visits to Kessler Foundation in West Orange, NJ including a screening visit, baseline testing session (2-3 hours), 16 training sessions (1.5 hours), and a follow-up testing session (2-3 hours).

 

Healthy control participants will be enrolled for 4 weeks. There will be a total of 3 visits to Kessler Foundation in West Orange, NJ including a screening visit, baseline testing (2-3 hours), and follow-up testing visit (2-3 hours). 

Inclusion Criteria
  • Individuals diagnosed with TBI or healthy volunteers aged 18-70.
  • Able to stand unsupported for 5 minutes. 
  • Not planning to make any drastic changes to medications for the duration of the study .
  • No history of injury or disease within the last 90 days
Compensation

Individuals randomly assigned to the intervention group will receive up to $350 for their time.

Individuals randomly assigned to the non-intervention group will receive up to $150 for their time. 

Individuals in the healthy control group will receive up to $150 for their time.
