Improving New Learning and Memory in People with Mild Cognitive Impairment

Study will administer the Kessler Foundation modified Story Memory Technique ®(KF-mSMT) to individuals with mild cognitive impairment to treat impaired new learning and memory (NLM).

Duration

This study takes 18 months to fully complete. However, after the 8-month follow-up session, there is only 1 additional session at 18 months.

  • 1 screening visit (2 hours)
  • In-person intervention sessions meet 2x per week for 5 weeks (45-60 mins each)
  • 3 in-person testing sessions (3 hours each over an 8-month period)
  • 1 additional 20-month follow-up testing session (3 hours)
  • Some participants will meet for refresher sessions once a month
     
  • This study requires a blood draw
  • There is also an optional MRI
  • Participants have a 50/50 chance to be placed in either the treatment group or the control group
Inclusion Criteria
  • 60 years or older
  • Read and speak English fluently
  • Have difficulties with learning and memory skills as determined at an in-person screening session
Compensation

Participants receive $550 for completing the study; participants who also complete 2 MRI scans receive $700 total.
