Kessler Foundation researchers present at first International Congress on Cognition in MS

Kessler Foundation’s experts in cognitive research in multiple sclerosis to share new research findings at international meeting in Bordeaux, France
West Orange, NJ. April 30, 2012. Kessler Foundation will be represented by four scientists at the inaugural International Congress on Cognition in Multiple Sclerosis to be held at the Congress Center in Bordeaux, France on May 11 & 12, 2012. John DeLuca, PhD, the Foundation’s VP of Research and Training will attend with research scientists Victoria Leavitt, PhD, Lauren Strober, PhD, and James Sumowski, PhD. Kessler Foundation is known for rehabilitation research in cognition and mobility. MS research at Kessler Foundation is conducted in the Neuropsychology & Neuroscience Laboratory under the direction of Nancy Chiaravalloti, PhD.
“Cognitive impairment is a significant cause of disability in MS,” said Dr. DeLuca. “We are pleased to join with our colleagues in the global community to work toward effective preventive and therapeutic strategies. At Kessler Foundation, our interest extends to the impact of cognitive difficulties on employment, a major consideration in this relatively young patient population.” Dr. Leavitt will present her research on predictors of memory decline in MS; Dr. Strober ‘s topic is cognitive predictors of unemployment among people with MS and Dr. Sumowski will discuss the protective effect of intellectual enrichment against cognitive impairment , a finding in MS that was demonstrated for the first time at Kessler Foundation.
Drs. DeLuca, Strober, Sumowski and Leavitt have faculty appointments at the University of Medicine & Dentistry in New Jersey,
About the Congress
Cognitive deficits in MS are increasingly recognized as a significant cause of disability among people with MS. An International Organizing Committee has formed a new scientific group devoted to cognitive impairment in MS. The goal is to provide a professional forum for science, practice and education in the field of cognition in MS and related diseases. The 2012 International Congress on Cognition in Multiple Sclerosis is the committee’s first convocation. Topics include diagnostic methods, imaging studies, pathologic mechanisms, rehabilitation strategies, and therapeutic approaches.
