Housing for People with Disabilities Opens with Kessler Foundation Support

2012-05-08 12:44:27 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEAS

A wheelchair accessible and affordable apartment complex opened in Linden, N.J.—formerly the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Convent—for low income individuals with disabilities. Kessler Foundation awarded a $25,000 disability grant to the project dedicated to constructing a wheelchair accessible bathroom.

“Kessler Foundation was proud to contribute to the Apartments at St. Elizabeth’s project as a part of our mission to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. The results are beautiful,” said Elaine Katz, vice president of Grants and Special Initiatives at Kessler Foundation. “More than half of the 845,000 people with disabilities in N.J. report having mobility impairments. With the majority of apartments in the state being inaccessible, these individuals need to have a place to call their own and feel independent.”

The Apartments at St. Elizabeth’s feature a three-story building with an elevator and 11 accessible units. It is equipped with larger than customary kitchen, with cabinets in reach for wheelchair users, and bathroom, with a roll-in shower. The apartments are located within close proximity to public transportation and shopping centers.

The $3.2 million project was also funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, NJ Housing Mortgage Finance Agency, Union County HOME program and Community Development Block Grant. Rents are subsidized by the Federal Section 811 program. For more information on the Apartments at St. Elizabeth’s, contact Marzulli Management at 973-743-2300.
