Clinical Research Summit, Innovative Physiologic Treatments for Aphasia, June 21, 2010

June 21, 2010 Clinical Research Summit - Innovative Physiologic Treatments for Aphasia

Up to 6 Category 1 CME credits available ASHA, PT/OT credit pending Post-stroke communication disorders

Post-stroke communication disorders of speech and language (aphasia) affect 20-30% of all stroke survivors in acute recovery stages. Newly identified US stroke survivors with aphasia (159,000-238,000 annually) greatly outnumber people with acute spinal cord injury, brain and nervous system cancer, and newly diagnosed Parkinson Disease, but acute medical treatment options for this disorder are not optimally developed.

The goals of this conference are

To update the current state of the art for treatment of acute aphasia in people with brain injury in civilian and military/VA care systems.

To derive a consensus research agenda, prioritizing 8 urgent research questions.

To encourage responsible innovation in the design of acute and post-acute medical rehabilitation programs.

This will be accomplished through organized discussion by a group of recognized leaders in the rehabilitation of cognition and language.

Audience:

Public session: rehabilitation physicians (physiatrists, neurologists, internists, psychiatrists, brain injury professionals); allied health professionals in speech-language pathology, occupational and physical therapy; acute and post-acute hospital program administrators; scientists specializing in cortical neural recovery, cognitive rehabilitation, and mechanisms of language dysfunction and language remediation

Scientific panelists addressing how to eliminate translational blocks in aphasia care:
