North Jersey Navigators set new records at 2014 National and World Championships

At the 2014 National Junior Disability Championships (NJDC) in Iowa, the North Jersey Navigators set 23 new national records. The twelve athletes who represented the Navigators took home a record 131 medals (104 Gold, 20 Silver, and 7 Bronze).  The team placed FIRST in the Large Team category!

In addition, four athletes and one member of the Navigators’ staff were selected for the USA Junior Team in the 2014 International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) World Junior Games in Stoke Mandeville, UK, netting 7 Medals (5 Gold and 2 Bronze).

The NJDC and IWAS Junior World Championship Games give young athletes with disabilities an opportunity to compete on a big stage with top athletes from around the world. They also prepare for the ultimate goal—to qualify for future Paralympics.

The Navigators, an adaptive sports team for junior athletes with disabilities, is based in Jersey City. Individuals train in track, field, swimming, archery, road racing and table tennis. Head Coach Jimmy Cuevas and the rest of the coaching staff are dedicated to expanding the athletic skills of their talented team members while fostering an environment of independence and encouraging further education.

Since 2008, Kessler Foundation awarded five grants to the North Jersey Navigators to provide seed funding and ongoing support for equipment and travel costs. We are so proud of their growth, incredible success, dedication, and continued determination. Congratulations, Navigators!
