Ghana Athlete Prepares for Kessler Foundation 10K

WheelChair racer plans to add to his international medals

Obeng aims to qualify for Paraplympics in London.

Patrick Obeng of Team Ghana competed in the 11th Annual Kessler Foundation Wheelchair 10k on Monday, May 30th in Ridgewood, NJ.  The race, which is the wheelchair division of the Fred d'Elia Ridgewood Run has become the premier wheelchair 10k in the Northeast.

Kessler Foundation sponsored Obeng and Sam Aidoo, technical director of the Ghana Paralympic Committee to come to the US to race in several competitions so that Obeng can qualify for the Paralympics.   Medals are just part of the big story.  Adaptive sports have had a huge impact in Ghana, where the successes of athletes with disabilities have garnered national attention, changing attitudinal barriers that once made them second-class citizens.
