This grant for $97,500 from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation will enable researchers to develop a series of 3 educational videos on the prevention and management of medical complications in persons with spinal cord injury. This brings the year to date grant total for Kessler Foundation to $4.7 million.

This interactive, multi-media-based, medical education series that will provide guidance and assistance for consumers with SCI, caregivers and professionals in the management and prevention of common medical complications associated with SCI. The three (30-minute) learning modules will address these major complications: (1) respiratory dysfunction; (2) neurogenic bowel; and (3) pressure ulcers. These conditions were selected because of their impact on the health, function and quality of life for individuals with SCI.

This collaborative project of the Northern New Jersey SCI System is headed by David Tulsky, PhD, director of the Spinal Cord Injury Research Laboratory. Collaborators include Trevor Dyson-Hudson, MD, Denise Fyffe, PhD, and videographer Jody Banks from Kessler Foundation, and Steven Kirshblum, MD, medical director and director of the SCI program at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation and Sandra DeLeon, MS, BSN, CRRN, CCM, patient educator and coordinator of spinal cord services.
