Dr. Harkema & Kent Stephenson visit Kessler Foundation

Update on Innovative SCI Research into Electrical Stimulation & Locomotor Training

West Orange, NJ. Kessler Foundation hosted Susan Harkema, PhD, noted neurorehabilitation researcher from the University of Louisville, and Kent Stephenson, a research participant with tetraplegia, on March 14. Dr. Harkema provided an update on her research to restore mobility after spinal cord injury using combination therapy with electrical stimulation and intensive locomotor training.  Dr. Harkema has studied five patients so far, with promising results. Kessler Foundation provided part of the funding for the study of Mr. Stephenson, the second patient to receive an implanted stimulator and intensive training. Dr. Harkema collaborates with Gail Forrest, PhD, PT, assistant director of Human Performance & Engineering Research at Kessler Foundation. Pictured are Dr. Forrest, Mr. Stephenson and Dr. Harkema.
