Developed by Nancy Chiarvalloti, PhD, our groundbreaking protocol, Kessler Foundation modified Story Memory Technique (KF-mSMT®), is based on the use of context and imagery to reinforce learning and recall, and applying these strategies to the memory demands of everyday life.

Memory rehabilitation helps people strengthen learning and recall by teaching practical strategies they can use in everyday life. Kessler Foundation researchers developed Kessler Foundation modified Story Memory Technique (KF-mSMT®), an evidence-based intervention that uses context and imagery to improve memory. Originally developed for people with multiple sclerosis, it is now being studied in older adults with age-related cognitive changes and mild cognitive impairment. Spatial neglect, a common complication of stroke that often goes undetected, affects a person’s awareness of one side of their body or surroundings, impacting recovery. Researcher Peii Chen, PhD, focuses on improving treatments and bringing effective rehabilitation into clinical practice and patients’ homes.

The outlook for individuals with spatial neglect largely hinges on detecting symptoms early. Clinical observation and quick tests are essential because individuals with spatial neglect may not always recognize their deficits, making self-reporting unreliable.
