Strengthening Thinking Skills

Proven Strategies to Improve Learning and Memory

Our researchers are helping people with multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, and age-related decline to improve their ability to learn and remember. Developed by Nancy Chiarvalloti, PhD, our groundbreaking protocol, Kessler Foundation modified Story Memory Technique (KF-mSMT®), is based on the use of context and imagery to reinforce learning and recall, and applying these strategies to the memory demands of everyday life.

Integrating Approaches to Enhance Language

Research led by Olga Boukrina, PhD, integrates advanced brain imaging, neurofeedback, and aerobic exercise to help people recover language and reading skills after stroke.

Enhancing Cognitive Function Through Exercise

Researchers Brian Sandroff, PhD, and Carly Wender, PhD, are investigating how cycling, combined with virtual reality and cognitive training, can improve thinking speed, learning, and memory in people with multiple sclerosis and traumatic brain injury.

The Hidden Impact of Spatial Neglect
Revealing, assessing, and healing after stroke

Spatial neglect, a neurological condition often following right-brain stroke, causes people to ignore the left side of their body or surroundings. Researcher Peii Chen, PhD, leads the development of innovative tools to assess and treat spatial neglect.

Unlocking the Brain’s Secrets Behind Cognitive Fatigue

Researchers are using brain imaging to reveal how cognitive fatigue disrupts neural networks in MS, TBI, and stroke. Groundbreaking work led by Glenn Wylie, DPhil, is paving the way for smarter treatments and helping people reclaim energy, focus, and quality of life.
