Following a near-fatal car crash that resulted in a traumatic brain injury, Hillary Hartnett enrolled in a Kessler Foundation spatial neglect study. Spatial neglect can occur after a stroke or TBI damages one side of the brain. The condition can reduce awareness of people, objects, or space on one side, making everyday tasks more difficult.
The rehabilitation experience was life-changing for Hillary. “With each session, I got better,” she says. “I realized…this is what I need to do: be involved in research and this community.” Her progress reflects the promise of cognitive therapies tailored to how each person thinks, learns, and heals.
Today, Hillary is an advocate, author, and support group leader and is also participating in two more studies. “Finding my voice helped me come back to myself, and I know I can help others living with TBI,” she says.
“Your support creates lifelines to recovery, connection, and purpose.”
