The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a potential treatment for elbow and wrist spasticity, or muscle spasms, known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy, which uses high-intensity sound waves delivered from outside the body through an external device.
The study will require 6 visits over the course of about 3 months. The initial screening visit could take up to 2 hours. The 3 treatment visits could take about 1 hour 15 minutes each. The 2 follow-up visits could take about 1 hour each.
You may be eligible if you:
- Are 18 years of age or older
- Have paralysis from an SCI (complete or incomplete) that occurred greater than 1 year prior to your screening visit and is not getting worse over time
- Have moderate spasticity in your arm (elbow and wrist) muscles, as determined by the study physician
- Have not had an infection at the treatment site within the past 3 months
- Do not have a severe bleeding disorder (such as hemophilia)
- Have not changed your spasticity medications within the past 3 months and do not intend to change them over the course of the study
- Are willing to comply with the protocol, including attending all scheduled follow-up visits
