Jimmy Brown sustained a spinal cord injury in a diving accident in 2004. Diagnosed with a C5-C6 complete injury, he underwent rehabilitation at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation for paralysis from the chest down, and limited use of his arms and hands. In this video, Jimmy demonstrates the gains in function he has achieved through transcutaneous stimulation research. Activating the stimulator on the surface of the skin overlying his injured spinal cord, enabled him to lift and pour water from a pitcher into a glass. Jimmy strives to improve his arm and hand function so he can do more for himself, and interact with his children.
Jimmy Brown was one of three individuals with spinal cord injury who demonstrated the progress they have made through spinal stimulation research, at the June 3, 2019 event highlighting Kessler Foundation’s new Center for Spinal Stimulation: Transforming Care and Recovery for People with Spinal Cord Injury.
