Our research is the foundation for developing evidence‑based clinical tools. We specialize in creating innovative assessments, treatments, and training programs that translate scientific discovery into practical applications for individuals with spatial neglect.

Areas of Focus

Peii (Peggy) Chen, PhD, directs the Spatial Attention, Awareness, and Ability Laboratory within Kessler Foundation's Center for Stroke Rehabilitation Research, where she is assistant director. The Lab investigates the neural and behavioral mechanisms underlying the diverse symptoms of spatial neglect, a neurological disorder that frequently follows brain injury, most commonly stroke.

Spatial neglect profoundly disrupts spatial processing and attentional orientation, often affecting an individual’s ability to interact safely and effectively with their environment. Compounding these challenges, many individuals with spatial neglect lack awareness of their own deficits or their functional consequences, which can delay diagnosis, treatment, and the adoption of effective compensatory strategies.

Dr. Chen and her team are committed to bridging scientific discovery and clinical practice. Their research integrates rigorous experimental investigation with real‑world application, spanning a continuum of approaches, from low‑tech prism‑adaptation treatment tools to advanced virtual‑ and mixed‑reality technologies.

Through the development and global dissemination of evidence‑based tools, including the Kessler Foundation Neglect Assessment Process (KF‑NAP®), Prism Adaptation Treatment (KF‑PAT®), and Spatial Retraining Therapy (KF‑SRT®), the Lab has enhanced clinicians' knowledge and improved rehabilitation practice worldwide.
