We examine social and cultural factors that perpetuate health disparities in rehabilitation and outcomes after brain injury.
Anthony Lequerica, PhD, directs the Brain Injury and Behavioral Outcomes Laboratory within Kessler Foundation's Center for Traumatic Brain Injury Research. The Lab team investigates the interplay between culture and rehabilitation outcomes, as well as sleep and wake abnormalities after brain injury. During sleep studies, Dr. Lequerica and team have observed the enhancing effect of sleep on motor learning following brain injury.
The Lab's research on health disparities examines outcomes for people with brain injury from various racial and ethnic backgrounds. The team explores the complex social, community, and cultural factors that perpetuate disparities, including healthcare access and quality, education, economic stability, neighborhood characteristics, language barriers, and beliefs about healthcare and mistrust of healthcare. Studies involving Spanish-speaking individuals from Spain, Latin America, and the U.S. have yielded early, promising evidence that validated Spanish-language tools can effectively assess brain injury exposure, thereby promoting greater inclusion of Spanish speakers in future research.
