Denise C. Fyffe, PhD, is an assistant director in the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Research, director of the Center's Health Equity in Disability and Outcomes Research Laboratory at Kessler Foundation, and a co-investigator in the federally funded Northern New Jersey Spinal Cord Injury System. She is also an assistant director in the Center for Outcomes and Assessment Research at the Foundation.
She has facilitated focus groups, semi-structured and cognitive interviews among individuals with SCI, caregivers, and clinicians in the development of SCI-specific quality of life measures as well as cognitive interviews with diverse populations. Dr. Fyffe helped spearhead the SCI Navigator Program at the Foundation to provide a free, dedicated resource for individuals with spinal cord injury and their families. Through care coordination, support adjusting to home life, and connections to community resources, the program meets the evolving needs of people living with spinal cord injury.
Dr. Fyffe received her Doctorate in Clinical and School Psychology from Hofstra University. She completed postdoctoral training in geriatric mental health at the Weill Cornell Institute of Geriatric Psychiatry followed by additional training in cancer disparities at the Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She is a research assistant professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and a leader in the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, serving as past Chair of ACRM’s SCI Interdisciplinary Special Interest Group.

Research Interests
Dr. Fyffe's current clinical and research interests focus on reducing disparities in the care and quality of life of medically underserved rehabilitation groups. Dr. Fyffe is involved in the development of a quality of life measure for use in spinal cord injury and innovative interventions to improve outcomes for persons with SCI using the National SCI Model Systems database. Her research also includes investigation of the demographic, sociocultural, and clinical factors associated with disparities in functional outcomes among individuals living with spinal cord injury.
Dr. Fyffe has led and collaborated on several projects funded by the Department of Defense, Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program, Spinal Cord Injury Research Program, using mixed-methods approaches to examine socioeconomic issues related to clinical outcomes, the use of clinical video technology in healthcare and striving to work among Veterans living with an SCI.
