Kiran K. Karunakaran, PhD, is a senior research scientist in the Center for Mobility and Rehabilitation Engineering and director of the Balance Assessment and Training Laboratory at Kessler Foundation. She is also a research assistant professor in the Rehabilitation Engineering Center at New Jersey Institute of Technology and a research associate professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Her research includes designing, developing, and evaluating assistive and rehabilitative technologies.

Research Interests

Dr. Karunakaran’s research interests include designing, developing, and evaluating rehabilitation devices and techniques. Her focus is on understanding the effectiveness of using virtual reality and robotic exoskeletons as rehabilitation interventions in children and adults with brain injury (traumatic brain injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, and aging) using cortical, neuromechanical, and functional measures.
