Evaluation of a computerized biofeedback based intervention to improve postural control and remedy balance dysfunction in Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Including Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

The purpose of this research study is to assess your ability to sense small changes in movement under your feet while standing and determine if a computerized balance program could improve your balance.

Duration

For individuals in the Intervention group:

If you are assigned to the Intervention Group, the study will take you approximately 8 weeks to complete. You will be expected to attend 20 visits at Kessler Foundation. This includes an initial screening visit, baseline (initial testing session), 16 training (intervention) sessions, and 2 follow up testing sessions. Testing sessions will last approximately 2-3 hours. Training sessions will last approximately 1.5 hours.

For individuals in the Non-intervention group and Healthy Control group:

The study will take you approximately 8 weeks to complete. You will be expected to attend 3-4 visits at Kessler Foundation. This includes an initial screening visit, baseline (initial testing session), and 1 follow up testing session if you are a healthy control or 2 follow up testing sessions if you have an ABI/TBI. Balance testing visits will last 2-3 hours.

Inclusion Criteria

INCLUSION CRITERIA for Individuals Who Have Had a Stroke or TBI:

  • Individuals aged 18-65.
  • Diagnosed with a TBI or stroke by a physician and be at least 6 months post injury.
  • Medically stable for 3 months prior to most recent stroke/TBI.
  • Not plan to make any drastic changes to medications (as determined by study staff) for at least 2 months.
  • Able to stand unsupported for 5 minutes.

INCLUSION CRITERIA FOR HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS:

  • Individuals aged 18-65.
  • Not plan to make any drastic changes to medications for at least 2 months.
  • Able to stand unsupported for 5 minutes.

Compensation

For individuals in the Intervention group: You will receive $100 for attending each study visit (Baseline, 4 Weeks, and 4 Weeks Post-Intervention), for a total of up to $300. Additionally, you will be compensated $400 upon completing the training intervention (4 sessions a week for 4 weeks), for a total of $700.

For individuals in the Non-intervention group: You will receive $100 for attending each study visit (Baseline, 4 Weeks, and 8 Weeks), for a total of up to $300.
