Comparison of Two Different Group Wellness Programs for People with TBI and their Support Persons

This study compares the effect of two different types of group wellness treatments for individuals with moderate or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their support persons.

Duration

The study will take approximately 10 months to complete:

  • Baseline testing: paper and pencil tests, questionnaires, and blood draw* (3.5 hours)
  • Optional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan* (1 hour)
  • Group wellness classes meeting once a week for 12 weeks (2 hours each)
  • Immediate follow-up testing: questionnaires and blood draw* (2 hours)
  • No contact for 6 months
  • Long-term follow-up testing: questionnaires and blood draw* (2 hours)

*Only individuals with TBI receive blood draw and optional MRI scan.

Inclusion Criteria

Individuals with TBI:

  • 18-70 years of age
  • Diagnosis of moderate to severe TBI
  • At least one-year post-injury
  • Read and speak English fluently
  • Support person willing to participate in the study

Support Person:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Supports an individual with moderate to severe TBI who is also willing to participate
  • Can read and speak English fluently
Compensation

Individuals with TBI: Up to $350; Support Persons: Up to $300
