Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine Names Dr. Beverly Hon Winner of Ernest Bors Award
Beverly Hon, MD, is this year's winner of the Ernest Bors, MD Award for Scientific Development, the Journal's annual award for best article by a young investigator
East Hanover, NJ. August 31, 2020. The Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine (JSCM) and the leadership of the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals (ASCIP), announce that Beverly Hon, MD, is the recipient of this year’s Ernest Bors, MD Award for Scientific Development. Dr. Hon is primary author of the top-scoring article: “Duplex ultrasound surveillance for deep vein thrombosis after acute traumatic spinal cord injury at rehabilitation admission,” (doi: 10.1080/10790268.2019.1585134) co-authored by Amanda Botticello, PhD, MPH, and Steven Kirshblum, MD. The Bors Award recognizes the achievements of young investigators whose career paths focus on spinal cord injury. Dr. Hon, a graduate of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation and a fellowship in spinal cord injury medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation/Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, under the leadership of Dr. Kirshblum. The research for her article was conducted during her fellowship, which combines clinical training at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation with research training through Kessler Foundation.
The winning paper explores the risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in individuals with spinal cord injury. Because of the risk for further complications following distal DVT, the study suggests that screening on admission for rehabilitation may be advisable to identify at-risk patients in need of followup. Better understanding of the risk factors for thromboembolism during spinal cord injury rehabilitation could influence future clinical practice guidelines.

I am well prepared to continue to seek new ways to improve the care of individuals with spinal cord injury.”
Dr. Hon is currently an attending physician at Hackensack Meridian Health−JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, where she cares for patients with acute and chronic spinal cord injury. She is also an assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine.

About the Ernest Bors, MD Award for Scientific Development
Since 1994, the Bors Award has memorialized Dr. Ernest Bors (1900-1990), a pioneer in spinal cord injury care and research. Faced with caring for thousands of wounded veterans considered 'hopeless cases', Dr. Bors had to fight for basic resources. Despite these challenges, he made research and publication a priority. The Bors Award honors excellence among young investigators who, following the example set by Dr. Bors, are pursuing careers dedicated to bettering the lives of individuals with spinal cord injury.

For manuscripts accepted during 2020, the deadline for applications is January 15, 2021. Applicants must have conducted their research during their training.
