Improving New Learning and Memory in People with Mild Cognitive Impairment

Study will administer the Kessler Foundation modified Story Memory Technique ®(KF-mSMT) to individuals with mild cognitive impairment to treat impaired new learning and memory (NLM).

Over a decade of research and development conducted at Kessler Foundation has demonstrated the KF-mSMT to be effective for improving NLM in individuals with MS and TBI, across three realms of functioning: objective behavior, brain functioning, and everyday life. Long-term maintenance has been demonstrated.

Duration

This study takes 18 months to fully complete. However, after the 8-month follow-up session, there is only 1 additional session at 18 months.

  • 1 Screening visit (1 hour)
  • 4 In-person testing sessions (3 hours each)
  • In-person intervention sessions meet 2x per week for 5 weeks (45-60 mins each)
  • Some participants will meet for a refresher session once a month

Participants have a 50/50 chance to be placed in either the treatment group or the control group.

Inclusion Criteria
  • 60 years or older
  • Read and speak English fluently
  • Have difficulties with learning and memory skills as determined at an in-person screening session
Compensation

Participants receive $550 for completing the study; participants who also complete 2 MRI scans receive $700 total.
